MANY of us have got makeup products that we’ve been using for years – but when was the last time you checked the expiry date of your favourite beauty buys?
Well, one beauty fan named Becca has issued an urgent warning after showing off the disastrous effecting of using out of date makeup.
Becca, a former US-based content creator, took to TikTok (@beccabybeautiful) where she could be seen with blood-shot eyes and explains how she was left with cellulitis – a life-threatening skin infection that can cause sepsis or kidney damage if it’s not treated quickly.
“This up here is pink eye and cellulitis, plus some verse blood vessels from pressure in my head, all because I used expired makeup from my very old makeup collection that I shouldn’t have,” she claims.
Becca then goes on to explain that the point of the video is to show the expired makeup she used that she shouldn’t have, which are mostly limited collector’s items and no longer in production.
The makeup whizz begins by discussing “the culprit” which she claims was her out-of-date Kat Von D ‘Satan ‘saint and sinner’ palette.
“This is the culprit and this is my absolute favourite gold eyeshadow on the face of the planet – not anymore,” Becca says.
However, she notes that it won’t be thrown away but will be kept just for display purposes…”never to be put on an eyeball again.”
Discussing her love for the palette, she continues: “She’s beautiful.
“I have an art degree, I love art history and so this aesthetic was right up my alley.”
Expert reveals how long your makeup really lasts
Your everyday makeup products will start to expire once they’ve been opened and slowly begin oxidising .
If unopened products are stored in a cool, dry place, this will make them last longer.
Joanne Dodds from Hairtrade.com said: “I’m sure most of us will admit to not checking regularly and having much loved items lurking in your makeup bag for years.
“Whilst it doesn’t harm you to use some out-of-date makeup products, some provide moisture which bacteria thrives on, and mascara and eyeliner can cause eye irritations or infections.”
Most mascara tubes are labelled to have a shelf life of between four and six months.
Liquid eyeliner keeps for up to six months, as it’s susceptible to bacteria.
Liquid and cream foundations only last between six to 12 months as they are made up of oils, water and other hydrating agents that increase bacteria – but your powder foundation will last up to two years.
Next up, Becca points out that she thinks she can save both the brown Elf mascara and the brown eyeliner pencil that’s part of the Raw Beauty by Kristi and Colourpop collaboration because she didn’t use them “when getting ready in the incident.”
Moving on, she discusses all of the makeup she has to throwaway and begins with a “cheap” Elf black mascara which has been sitting in her drawer at work for four years.
“I do have to throw away my black eyeliners – the Anastasia Beverly Hills liquid liner, they still make this, so if I wanted it, I could get it again,” she explains.
“It’s not my favourite, so I don’t care that much.”
Becca points out she also has to throw away the ‘Too Faced sketch marker’ eyeliner that she mostly keeps for the felt tip on it.
“That also means I need to throw away my eyelash curler and my [Beauty Creations] eye primers – I mix these to make a perfect match to my skin.
“And I have to throw these away because, like a doofus, I apply it directly to my lid and not on back of my hand situation.”
She then reveals the collector’s items she needs to get rid of – including her everyday eyeshadow palette which is the ‘Raw Beauty Kristi Pure cosmetics collaboration,’ and the ‘Raw Beauty Kristi and Colourpop collaboration.’
Becca captioned the post: “TW: burst blood vessels in eye If you can’t tell, @rawbeautykristi is my favourite. Please learn from my mistakes!”
The post has since gone viral, garnering a whopping 892k views and several comments from horrified beauty fans up and down the country.
“It could also be the eye brushes – a lot of people don’t wash them as often as they’re suppose to,” wrote one.
A second penned: “Sooo I have about 6 palettes that I still use from 2016.”
A third commented: “Omg now I have to throw away my Carli Bybel palette from over 10 years ago away..even though I love it not risking it.”
Meanwhile, a fourth noted: “You just made decluttering so much easier for me.”
Another added: “Running to throw everything away!”
And a further chimed in: “Oh my goodness looks so painful!”
